Purpose of this site
This site exists to provide trustworthy, objective reviews of works released under the Creative Commons license. It is generally easy to find works licensed under Creative Commons, but the catch is that there is often so much of it, you are never sure which book to read, which music to listen to, which artists to inspire you. Sometimes fantastic works may slip you by simply because you were looking in the wrong direction. Creative Commons Reviews intends to provide the user with some insight into the quality of works from various different areas: music, literature, art, games
What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation which exists to help people grant copyright permissions on their creative work. Creative Commons is designed to allow people to share their work with others, or for creators to use existing works to form the basis of a new work. The term “Creative Commons” may refer to either the company, the works licensed through the company, or indeed the method of licensing employed.
What ISN’T Creative Commons
Creative Commons is NOT anti-copyright, nor is it an absence of copyright. It is merely a standardised way for creators to license their work either as “all rights reserved” (the creator maintains full control), “no rights reserved” (the work immediately enters the public domain), or “some rights reserved” (somewhere between the two extremes, as defined by the creator of the work.
Creative Commons is also not a glut of low quality work produced by people who “couldn’t make it in the real world”, though many would have you believe this. With luck, this site should prove the naysayers wrong.
Who created this site?
Creative Commons Reviews was created by Karl Smith, a video game producer who had become disillusioned with the prevailing business model after many years in the games industry. Shunning mainstream releases of not just video games but also music and movies, he discovered the plethora of fantastic works licensed under Creative Commons. Unable to find any reliable sources of reviews, Karl decided to create his own in the hope that others may benefit.
